Coral Gables was established in 1926 and is known for its historic old mansions, luxurious gated communities, and low key, lavish lifestyle. It was the first community to develop the home owner’s association and the gated community concept. Its downtown commercial district known as Miracle Mile was designed to be only 4 blocks wide and a little over 2 miles long. All of the architecture in the area is Mediterranean Revival Style, which is characterized by stuccoed walls, flat terracotta and tile roofs, arches, and scrolled or tile-capped parapet walls and door surrounds. The city is also home to the University of Miami. Coral Gables is known as a pedestrian city because of all the tree-lined streets, which are perfect for walking. Some of its landmarks are the Venetian Pool, Douglas Entrance, and the Biltmore Hotel. Gated Coral Gables Neighborhoods include Gables Estates, Cocoplum, and Snapper Creek.
