Although the Historical Museum of South Florida opened its doors in 1962, its conception started back in 1940 with the Historical Association of South Florida. The purpose of the Historical Museum of South Florida is to retell the stories of South Florida and the Caribbean, and to ensure people understand the past so that there can be a better quality of life for present and future. Currently it encompasses 40,000 square feet, and houses permanent and temporary exhibition space, classrooms, a Research Center, a theater, a museum store, offices and a controlled collections storage area. The museum houses collections of cultures that have had the most influence on South Floridians including Cubans, Haitians, Bahamians, and Native Americans. It is a salute to the people that make up South Florida.
