Located near Palmetto Bay, FL – The Miami Metro Zoo (now called the Miami-Dade Zoological Park and Gardens, or Zoo Miami) is one of the top 10 zoos in the United States. It is also the only tropical zoo in the continental US. The Miami Metro Zoo houses over 2,000 animals, living on 740 acres of prime Miami real estate. In 1948, the zoo opened its doors with six animals on Key Biscayne, in Downtown Miami. After Hurricane Betsy destroyed the zoo in 1965, they decided to move the zoo to a different location. Attaining some land in Dade County, and after years of planning, negotiating, and building, the Miami Metro Zoo opened the doors in 1980. In 2008, they opened the World Class Amazon and Beyond Exhibit featuring giant river otters that can grow to six-feet-long, as well as a harpy eagle with talons the size of grizzly bear claws, and anacondas.
