South Miami is known for its many parks, its tree-lined neighborhood streets, and its historic buildings, restaurants and shops at Sunset Place. Incorporated in 1927, it takes up 2.5 square miles, and is one of the oldest municipalities in Miami. In 1897, an early pioneer founded South Miami by settling his family here and began to farm. He built a post office a year later and by 1917, there was a population of 350. Almost 10 years later South Miami became a city, but it also went through a terrible hit by a hurricane (The Great Hurricane of 1926), which devastated the town. Over the years South Miami has gone through many troubles and many changes, but it has also been growing and redeveloping. Today it is known as a unique small town: the “City of Pleasant Living”.
